Liberty Harbor on Ways to Go Green

Lessen Your Carbon Footprint with These Great Ideas

Believe it or not, winter will soon come to an end. Liberty Harbor is ready to welcome spring with some simple ways to go green. Saving energy, recycling and reducing your carbon footprint are all easy ways to prepare for a new season. Liberty Harbor is ready to help residents conserve resources and feel good about caring for the environment. Read on for some ideas to get you started including an initiative Liberty Harbor is bringing in.

Go Green by Saving Energy

You might be surprised at how many ways there are to save energy around your home. Everyone can play a part in contributing to a healthy planet, and small efforts add up to big impacts. Look for upcoming newsletters for residents on saving energy in the summer and the winter. Here are some of the ways you can get started:

  • Cleaning PTAC filters. Packaged terminal air conditioner, or PTAC, filters are part of self-contained heating and air conditioning units. Cleaning them on a regular basis helps units run efficiently, keeping you comfortable and saving you money.
  • Unplug electronics. Sounds simple, and it is. “Phantom load” is the electricity used by devices while they’re turned off or in standby mode. Unplugging items like chargers, power strips or even your coffee pot can save lots of energy per month.
  • Using window shades and blinds. The right window treatments are not only nice to look at but save you money. Regulating heat gain and loss throughout the year is another way to go green and feel good at home.
  • Optimal temperatures in summer and winter. Learning the best temperatures for your home is a painless way to be energy efficient. Programmable thermostats help you create the best environment for your family.
  • Keeping fridge and freezer full. This is another great way to keep energy costs down. By making sure you don’t have empty space in your refrigerator or freezer, you help regulate the temperature.
  • Turning off “heat dry” on dishwashers. Some sources say that turning off this function can save you upwards of $70 a year on your energy bill.

Convenient Ways to Recycle Electronics

Liberty Harbor is excited to announce the placement of special containers for batteries, old cell phones and printer cartridges. Starting today, Monday March 5, 2018, there are boxes located at 9, 30 and 50 Regent. Some other great resources in our area are the following:

  • Call 2 Recycle: Batteries contain hazardous materials and need to be disposed of properly, which includes safely recycling them.
  • Recycling printer cartridges: New Jersey’s best information about safely recycling all types of printer cartridges, including store rewards.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs: Don’t throw them in the regular trash! It’s easy to do the right thing for the planet with fluorescent bulbs.
  • Electronics: Again, remembering to not throw these in the garbage helps the earth as much as recycling paper and plastic. We want residents to know about various charity, trade-in and recycle programs.

Working Together for the Planet

Once you’re informed, it’s a no-brainer to do the right thing for the environment. Jersey City families can feel good about the programs we have right here to help with these green initiatives. Liberty Harbor is looking forward to working with residents on these upcoming developments. Reducing our carbon footprint one step at a time and saving money means everyone benefits.

Lee Sr. who passed away from respiratory problems developed at Ground Zero. The Capt. Mark V. Lee Sr. JC Toy Fund is continued by his son, Mark Lee Jr. and the JCFD.

The fund distributes thousands of toys across Jersey City every year to underprivileged children.
