rainy drops on a window, text says rainy day activities

It’s easy to love spring when the sun is shining and we get our first warm days. But the is something about a rainy day that pose more of a challenge. We know they’re good and necessary for the environment, but they take a little more planning to enjoy. Take a look at our best ideas for those days when it’s rainy and you aren’t sure what to do!

  • Liberty Science Center – Currently, you can check out a Minecraft exhibition, where kids step “inside” the world of the game. Also check out the Butterfly House exhibit or any of the other hands-on fun for which they are so well known.

Around the House / Homemaking Ideas

Maybe your recent spring cleaning has uncovered more areas you’d like to devote time to in your home. A rainy day is a good time to take stock of projects, work on decorating ideas and just enjoy your home that you work so hard for.

  • Create a Craft – Make a DIY project that’s Etsy-worthy! Depending on your area of interest, you can start simple or go hog wild. Giving gifts of homemade quality is always more beloved than anything store bought.
  • Organize a Closet – Don’t laugh– rainy days are the best for mini at-home projects like that closet that you can’t find anything in. Using some expert advice, you can turn on some music and get organized. You might be inspired to tackle that junk drawer next.

Time to organize photos in a way that works for you. Learn the best ways to tackle this seemingly daunting task and decorate your home with photos.

Relax or Expand Your Mind

Americans are known for their hard work ethic, and sometimes this means burning the candle at both ends. It can take a toll on our health and families and overall way of life. A rainy day is the perfect time to reevaluate your priorities and work on some inward care.

  • Make it a Spa Day – If you have an opportunity for some solitary time, enjoy one of Jersey City’s most luxurious day spas to relax and rejuvenate you. Don’t feel guilty about taking time out for yourself as spa treatments have tremendous health benefits.
  • Escape to a Movie – But not just any movie. Check out a classic that you’ve never seen, or a recent Oscar winner, or an underrated or foreign film
  • Yoga Expertise – In an age when it seems like everything is available virtually, it matters even more to have the steady hand of an expert guiding you. Jersey City is home to many of the best yoga studios. For fitness, flexibility and spiritual balance, yoga is key.
  • Read – Sometimes the best use of our time isn’t fancy or “trending.” Just read something for your mind. Start at the Jersey City Public Library, or support one of our local independent bookstores

Sometimes staying home is the best way to spend a Saturday. The hustle and bustle of everyday life is enough to make anyone feel a bit crazy. When you have a little down time and some room to breathe, you can enjoy the simple things – umbrella in hand – or stay at home and get cozy.

The Best Slow Cooker Recipes to Welcome Winter

chef preparing meal for slow cooker

As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season descends upon us, so do the cold temperatures. It’s the perfect time of year to get the most out of your slow cooker. The last thing you need is any added stress, and a slow cooker gives you back the thing you need most: time. Check out this fantastic collection of the best slow cooker recipes to share with loved ones. You’ll feel yourself relaxing into the season.

Why You Need a Slow Cooker this Holiday Season

Slow cookers are as essential as a good winter coat. When the temperatures drop and the calendar fills up, turn to your best kitchen appliance. Whether you’re pulling a Crock Pot out of your pantry or shopping online for an upgraded multi-cooker, the recipes are innumerable. Be sure to visit the list of the best slow cookers for 2021, especially if you’re asking Santa for one.

Advantages of Slow Cookers

  • Easy to use – You don’t have to be an expert to pull of a delicious meal with a slow cooker. Most recipes call for literally placing ingredients in a pot and turning it on.
  • Saves you time. LOTS of time – Once you’re set up and it’s on, you’re good to go. Go do anything else you need to do. And there is no need to constantly check on its status, so you can fully turn your attention to work, family, or yourself.
  • Serve a crowd with no reheating – The “keep warm” setting on slow cookers means that you can keep your meal ready for a while after without overcooking. This comes in handy around the holidays when you may have guests arriving at different times or coming back later for second helpings.
  • Easy to Clean – When food is cooked at low temps, that means less sticking and caking on. This results in an easier cleanup and many inserts are now dishwasher safe, which is even better.
  • Saves you money – This one might surprise you. Not only does the slow cooker use less energy than a standard electric oven, but you can cook in bulk. Almost all the recipes we list are freezer friendly, so you can cook ahead too.
  • Bring out the flavors – Slow cookers are known for bringing out the fullest flavors in your ingredients. The low temperature and length of cooking time ensures the precise integration of flavors and gives you a treat for all the senses.

Best Squash Recipes

Fall flavors always include various types of squash. The slow cooker allows you to use this family of veggies in unique and delicious ways.

Whether it’s date night or thanksgiving pot-luck, the slow cooker is your key to success this winter.

Making the Best of Daylight Saving Time 2021

alarm clock with autumn leaves

Every year around this time, we hear a familiar question: “When do we turn back the clocks?” and “It’s later than I thought!” This year Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 7 at 2:00 AM. That’s when the clocks will “fall back” Read on for the history behind this practice and tips to make the most of longer nights and shorter days.

A Very Brief History of Daylight Saving Time

Contrary to popular belief, Daylight Saving Time did not begin for the farming community in the United States. In fact, they are one of the top opposers of the practice. Giving credit to Benjamin Franklin is another often misunderstood part of the time change phenomenon. His recommendation was originally made in jest as a way to get people out of bed earlier to minimize use of candles and lamp oil. In the US, daylight saving time was first used in 1918 when a bill introduced the idea of a seasonal time shift. Later during World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt re-established the idea calling it “War Time.” War Time began in February 1942 and lasted until the end of September 1945. Various legislation and economic factors saw our country involved in several iterations of time changes, switching from DST back to standard time throughout the years. Although it was an effort to save energy, it’s long been wrought with controversy.

The current daylight saving period was created with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which went into effect in 2007. Today, most Americans spring forward (turn clocks ahead and lose an hour) on the second Sunday in March (at 2:00 A.M.) and fall back (turn clocks back and gain an hour) on the first Sunday in November (at 2:00 A.M.).

How to Beat the Short-Day Blues

Everyone loves to “spring ahead” in March, after slogging through a long winter. Having an “extra” hour of daylight is comforting and hopeful to many people. But “falling back” in November is a tougher pill to swallow for many. So how to make the best of it and deal with it the best we can? Try these tips to help you stay upbeat during the winter months.

  • Exercise – Aim for 30-40 minutes a day. Even a brisk walk outside does a body good. The gym is great, but there’s no replacement for getting fresh air and what vitamin D you can get during winter months.
  • Light therapy – Many people who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder find that using a light box helps tremendously. Speak to your doctor to be sure to choose the right style and brightness for optimal results.
  • Eat a healthy, seasonal diet – This sounds like a no-brainer, but it can be a tough season. Halloween candy’s sitting around, suddenly it’s Thanksgiving, followed by holiday cookies and then we’re all on a diet come January 1. Cooking healthy meals for the family increases the odds you’ll all sit together, too.
  • Energize your senses – Many people delve into bright colors during the winter months. This means nail colors, a new shade of paint in the living room, and avoiding drab clothing. Additionally, nurture your spirit with essential oils for the winter months. The right oils can do everything from boosting immunity to promoting relaxation and focus..

Adjusting Sleep Schedules for Daylight Saving Time Ending

For lots of people, “springing ahead” is more challenging in the sleep department. But gaining an hour can be as disruptive to sleep systems. It can take the body nearly a week to adjust to the time change. People often experience trouble falling asleep and waking up. Here’s some tips for everyone in the family to wake up refreshed.

  • Make gradual schedule shifts – A few days before falling back set your alarm for 15 minutes later each day. That helps your body slowly adjust.
  • This goes for babies too – Put your little ones down 10 minutes later each night for several nights before. You’ll see them adjust best in these increments.
  • Room darkening – A dark room helps convince little ones of bedtime when the days become longer in spring. So in the fall, the dark room comes in hand in the mornings. It’s better for parents to control the light during these adjustment periods.
  • Use a sleep clock – Toddlers and young children benefit from sleep clocks to help them understand sleep and wake times. Clocks like this show a sun at wake-up time and a moon at bedtime, or they gradually get brighter when it’s time to wake up.
  • Create a nighttime routine – Adults and children alike get the best quality sleep when they have a solid wind-down routine. Reading (not on screens), a warm bath or a meditation are all good ways to signal to the body it’s time to slow down.
  • What to avoid – Caffeine, alcohol and screens. Those are the big three when it comes to relaxation and quality sleep. It can be hard with our busy lives to not fall into patterns of indulging in these close to the bedtime hour. But, your body will be happier if you give yourself a couple of hours to relax naturally.

Look Forward to the Lights

At this time of year, people can get down in the dumps with shorter days and colder, longer nights. Focus on the positives and making plans with family and friends. Check out events around Jersey City in upcoming posts to keep yourself busy and entertained this holiday season.
