What to Do When You Consolidate Two Jersey City Apartments Into One

You and your significant other are moving in together. There is only one dilemma, you both have apartments of your own that you have individually furnished. How do you combine the two apartments into one unique space that represents the two of you without having to buy all new furniture?

Make a List

First things first, make a list of all the things you each have individually. Then make a list of all the items you would need to furnish the new Jersey City apartment. Sit down together and look at the items you each have individually, more often than not you will have two of just about everything. Take a few days to de-clutter and organize each of your apartments. This is a good way to get rid of some of the things you do not like before they even have a chance to enter your new Jersey City apartment. This will also help you get a better understanding of what items are coming into the new apartment. You will be able to fill in the gaps much more easily if you can identify some of your needs before you move in. The worst thing to do is to try to fit everything you each have into your new space. Number one, it is impractical, and number two, it will make your space look incredibly cluttered and disorganized.

Decide Collectively What to Keep and What to Get Rid of in the Jersey City Apartment

Select items that work well together aesthetically and either throw out items that cannot be reused and you have no future need for, or else put the items into storage. Another good idea is to sell the items that are in good condition and you do not need. Use the extra money to get new or pre-owned items to tie the new apartment together. For the items you need to shop for, make it an outing where you shop together. Take the time to get to know your individual and collective taste as a couple before you go out. You will need to compromise in order to bring your Jersey City apartment together in a cohesive way.

Getting New Items for the Jersey City Apartment

When shopping for items for your Jersey City apartment keep in mind the color scheme and select your core items such as couches and wood items in more neutral colors so they can be used repeatedly in different spaces with different accents. Play with color and patterns in smaller more inexpensive items such as throws or pillows. Even use spray paint to transform a garage sale or antique store find into a focal point of any room. You can also use art to accent the room and pick bold frames to help draw the eye to them.

The bottom line is any move is challenging. Make sure to keep the process organized and calm. You and your significant other will find the process much more enjoyable if you work together to make the Jersey City apartment your own as a couple.
