Questions to Ask when Considering a Jersey City Rental

There are a lot of considerations when deciding on a Jersey City rental. This will be a long-term commitment that will hopefully be a great place to live! There are, however, a number of questions that should be asked prior to signing a Jersey City rental lease that will protect both the renter and the land lord or rental management company.

Jersey City Rental Repairs

A major question to ask if who is responsible for any repairs that could be required in the Jersey City rental under consideration. Oftentimes, the land lord or the management company will be responsible for issues related to plumbing, electrical and the like. If there are repairs that are required that are the fault of the renter, then the renter will more than likely be responsible for those types of repairs. Repairs such as spills on a carpet or cracks from hanging pictures on the walls would solely be the responsibility of the renter, unless there is some type of faulty construction, which is not often the case.

Another important question is to ask about lease requirements, including average rent increases and if there is a discount for signing a long-term lease. It is also important to ask if there is a penalty if for some reason there is a need to terminate the lease early. Sometimes emergencies happen, such as family illness, the loss of a job or a job transfer that could potentially result in the need to terminate the lease early.

It is important to ask these questions and fully understand the answers prior to signing a lease and making the commitment to any Jersey City rental.

Documentation of Issues in a Jersey City Rental

Prior to signing a lease of a Jersey City rental, it is important to do a walkthrough with the land lord or the rental management company to check for any damage or issues with the potential rental. Make sure any issues are documented on the lease, as well as how the issues will be resolved. It is important to have this information documented right at the beginning of the lease agreement so it does not become the issue of the renter, which could ultimately become their financial repair responsibility.
