The New York Giants and New York Jets recently began to consider which team would get the opportunity to open the new Meadowlands Stadium. Yes, according to a recent report in The Star-Ledger, the Giants and Jets planned to flip a coin to determine who might host the first regular season game.
According to the article, the full NFL schedule “will be released next month, though some games, such as the prime-time Week 1 matchups, as well as the Thanksgiving games, are announced in advance. It’s possible the new stadium will host a prime-time game in Week 1, so the Jets-Giants feud over the first game could be settled and announced soon,” (www.nj.com).
The decision, which was unveiled on March 15, underscored the fact that homes in Jersey City have access to several world-class sports venues – specifically the new Meadowlands Stadium.
ESPN reported that the Giants will play on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, and the Jets will host a Monday night game there the next day. Opponents have not yet been announced (www.espn.com).
Homes in Jersey City offer access to Manhattan and its endless entertainment, dining and shopping options. Jersey City, which itself represents the Garden State’s second-largest metropolitan area and a population of 240,000, features world-class attractions.
For the sports fan, options are also numerous.
In addition to the Prudential Center in Newark, home of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the Seton Hall men’s basketball team, homes in Jersey City are close to the Izod Center in East Rutherford (NBA’s New Jersey Nets) and Red Bull Arena in Harrison (MLS’s New York Red Bulls).
The crown jewel of New Jersey’s sports venues, however, is the new Meadowlands Stadium. According to the new Meadowlands Stadium web site, construction is 95 percent complete. All permanent seating has been installed and the exterior of the building has been finished. Demolition of the existing Giants Stadium is also underway (www.newmeadowlandsstadium.com).
The bottom line is homes in Jersey City City will have access to state-of-the-art sports venues, and the teams that call them home, for many years. Whether you are a fan of football, soccer, hockey or basketball, a wide variety of options exist.
