Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy recently requested that Google turn to his city as a test site for the company’s “Fiber to Communities” project. Residents of homes in Jersey City only stand to benefit should the internet giant choose New Jersey’s second-largest city for the program.

Per Healy’s letter, “By virtue of its geographic size, its population density, its population diversity, the presence of many of the world’s major financial entities and creativity of its residents, the City of Jersey City can provide Google a high probability of success in your ‘Fiber to Communities’ initiative,” (www.cityofjerseycity.com).

Condominiums in Jersey City Close to Soccer Action

New Jersey soccer fans at long last have access to a state-of-the-art athletic venue. The New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer opened Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, on March 20.

Though the home team dropped the exhibition match to Brazil’s Santos FC, the opening represented a new opportunity for soccer fans living in condominiums in Jersey City and around the state. Spectators can now take a quick trip to the arena by car or train (both PATH and NJ Transit lines travel to the Harrison station).

Could Transfer of Affordable Housing Control Affect Jersey City Condos?

The state Senate has begun to create a bill that would change the way affordable housing is handled in New Jersey, per the The Star-Ledger. According to the story – titled “N.J. Senate panel considers plan to transfer affordable housing control to towns” by Lisa Fleisher – the draft “would disband the controversial Council on Affordable Housing and turn its powers over to the State Planning Commission, ending 25 years of state power over municipal planning,” (www.nj.com).

Could this bill, if it passes, impact affordable housing and Jersey City condominiums? The affect, of course, remains to be seen. Currently, the Jersey City Housing Authority oversees housing for lower income families in the city.

Homes in NJ Facing Foreclosure

According to California-based RealtyTrac, the leading online marketplace for foreclosure properties, New Jersey ranked No. 14 in foreclosure rate for 2009. More than 63,000 homes in NJ received at least one foreclosure filing last year, per RealtyTrac (www.realtytrac.com).

According to the data released, these foreclosures represented 1.81 percent of housing units statewide, an alarming 103 percent increase from 2007 (www.realtytrac.com). Clearly homes in NJ did not escape the seemingly endless real estate crisis.
