Old-Style Jersey City Brownstones are Making a Comeback

During the time frame of late 19th century to the early 20th century, brownstones were incredibly popular in cities like Jersey City, New York, Chicago and Boston. Well, recently Jersey City brownstones have made a major resurgence in popularity.

The History of Jersey City Brownstones

Brownstone building material is brown Triassic sandstone that was used from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Most Jersey City brownstones were made from building materials from the Hummelstown Brownstone Company, which provided brownstone from 1863 to 1929 and at its height employed over 500 men. The quarries of the Hummelstown Brownstone Company were located just outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lifestyle of Jersey City Brownstones

There is a historical feeling when living in one of the Jersey City brownstones , whether living in an original brownstone or a new brownstone built in the old style. One of the most recognized parts of a brownstone is the front staircase and stoop. These are perfect for socializing with neighbors and enjoying ice cream in the summer and providing a picturesque snow-covered throw back in time during the winter months.

Another distinct feature of Jersey City brownstones is the entranceway. The doorways are often arched, making them especially unique. They are also often flanked by strong columns with ornate designs at the top to complete the picture. Once inside, the visitor is welcomed by hard wood floors and sweeping staircases. These unique homes easily conjure up living in another time and are often the backdrop of many movies and television shows looking to depict life in New York City and the eastern cities of New Jersey, regardless of the time frame.

The Resurgence of Jersey City Brownstones

Currently, Jersey City brownstones are making a huge comeback. New home construction is taking a page from architectural history and employing the style of the original historic brownstone. Unlike living in the original brownstone age, however, the new brownstones often provide state-of-the-art living once inside, while still staying true to the original architectural style. This is a perfect way to combine the comforts of morning-day living with the architectural past.
