A big step when working to narrow down the search of Jersey City apartments under consideration is to visit the locations under deliberation. Here are a few suggestions when going on the visit of each location that will help facilitate the decision-making process.

What to Do When Looking at Jersey City Apartments

Before going to look at the Jersey City apartments under consideration, make a spreadsheet that includes all the important considerations to the potential renter. Make several printouts and fill each one out during the visit to each apartment. The list should include room sizes, parking, rent, potential rent increases, which utilities are the responsibility of the renter and which are the responsibility of the land lord, just to name a few. Don’t finish the visit until all fields are completed and the potential renter is satisfied with all the answers. This way after all the visits to the Jersey City apartments under consideration are complete, the lists can be compared in an effort to narrow down the list.

Along with the spreadsheet, it is a good idea to bring a tape measure along to verify the room sizes. Oftentimes, the person listing the rental just estimates room sizes. It is important to have exact measurements to help ensure the potential renter’s furniture will fit comfortably. If major differences between the listing’s room sizes and the actual room sizes are found, the potential renter should bring it to the potential land lord’s attention. It is also a good idea to measure the room sizes in the current apartment for a comparison. If an apartment is possibly “the one,” it doesn’t hurt to measure the different pieces of furniture and sketch out where the furniture should be placed. Even consider bringing along a roll of tape and “taping out” on the floor where the furniture would be placed in each room. This will help give the potential renter a visual on how crowded or spacious the room may be after the furniture is placed.

Another good idea is to bring along a digital camera. It is not uncommon to forget details of the different Jersey City apartments under consideration after the visit is over, especially when looking at multiple Jersey City apartments in a day or two. By taking photos of each apartment during the visit, it will help jog the potential renter’s memory.

The photos, coupled with the notes taken on the spreadsheet will help the potential renter make a completed informed decision on which of the Jersey City apartments is the perfect new home!
