Researching a Jersey City Rental

Filed under: Renting in Jersey City NJ Tags: — admin @ 9:22 pm

Considering a move to a new location is a major decision. This will be a new home for hopefully years to come. While some prefer to buy a condo or single family house, many more prefer a Jersey City rental for a variety of reasons.

Why Consider a Jersey City Rental?

Deciding to go with a Jersey City rental instead of purchasing a house or condo is often a good decision for many reasons. For example, if an individual has just graduated college and is ready to move out on their own, a rental would make sense. Also, if someone needs to relocate for work and needs to move quickly, a rental would make the most sense. Especially if the employee is unsure how long the relocation will last. Still others may choose a Jersey City rental if they prefer not to handle upkeep of a private house. Expenses related to owning a private home can include roof, plumbing and electrical maintence, lawn upkeep and snow removal. These expenditure can be extremely costly.

Costs Associated with a Jersey City Rental

While the cost of a Jersey City rental is less than purchasing a house or condo, there are still upfront and ongoing costs that require consideration. In addition to the monthly rent, a security deposit is often required. This is usually one and one-half month’s rent and is required upfront at the time of lease signing.

Another consideration is whether or not to use a real estate agent when looking for a Jersey City rental . There is usually a fee charged to the renter to use this service, which is often one month’s rent. Sometimes, this can be negotiated with the land lord, depending on how eager the land lord is looking to rent the unit. However, this cost should be planned on by the renter, to ensure all potentially up-front needed funds are on-hand. This way if the perfect Jersey City rental is found, the potential renter can move quickly.

Signing the Lease

Prior to signing a lease for a Jersey City rental , it is important the potential renter ask all questions and have answers that are complete and make the renter feel comfortable with the transaction. Ask about potential rent increases, responsibility for snow removal, lawn care (if applicable), minor repairs and so on. It is also important to do a “walk through” with the land lord prior to signing the lease so any damage is noted. This way it will not become the responsibility of the renter to repair.
