The History of Jersey City Brownstones

Nothing is quite possibly more recognizable than brownstone architecture that can be found in areas like Jersey City, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. These buildings, often in row house form, are often quite sought after and provide a great way to step back in time while still living in a bustling city and enjoying state-of-the-art living.

Jersey City Brownstones

The first and most identifying feature of Jersey City Brownstones is the clay, deep red or brown-colored facade of the building. The term brownstone specifically relates to the brown Triassic sandstone, which was a popular building material during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The brownstone term more commonly referred to a terraced (or rowhouse) using this material. Many use the term brownstone when a home appears to match this type of architectural style, even if the home isn’t a “true” brownstone home.

Another common and identifiable feature is the front steps and stoop, which is great for watching the world go buy in the summer and a way of sitting and chatting with neighbors over a cup of coffee in the morning on a Sunday or an ice cream in the late afternoon while watching the kids play outside.

Finally, another identifying feature of Jersey City Brownstones are the adornments on either side of the entranceway. Most Jersey City brownstones display leaves, while the most expensive homes would have large columns with ornate capitals flanking heavy doors, often rounded in style.

More Recent Styles of Jersey City Brownstones

Recently, Jersey City Brownstones and their styling have made a comeback mixing the classic with the contemporary. While purists of the style may question the overall development, many just enjoy the overall depiction of the style, complete with its identifiable front stoop and columns flanking the doorway. These new buildings combine the classic facade and hardwood floors with state-of-the-art features many want in their home, like stainless steel appliances and washers and dryers in their brownstone home.

Living in Jersey City Brownstones

Many love the styling of modern day Jersey City Brownstones, as well as enjoying the lifestyle and living these brownstones provide, while being close to New York City via mass transit for work for pleasure.
