Jersey City Condos Offer Numerous Shopping Opportunities

Jersey City condos and apartments offer access to a variety of attractions that appeal to the city’s 240,000 residents. And though New Jersey’s second-largest urban center is celebrated for its proximity to Manhattan’s world-famous shopping districts, Jersey City features its fair share of retail therapy.

Yes, the Big Apple is famous for – among many other things – its enthusiasm for shopping and high fashion. Those who make their homes in Jersey City condos, however, need not travel across the Hudson River to seek both designer clothes and deep discounts.

According to Jersey City’s website, www.cityofjerseycity.com, several shopping locales are mere steps away from many residential areas. For example, Jersey City spotlights the following:

  • Central Avenue
  • Danforth/Old Bergen Road
  • Five Corners
  • Journal Square
  • Martin Luther King Drive, Monticello Avenue and Ocean Avenue (also known as “The Hub”)
  • McGinley Square
  • Newark Avenue/Downtown
  • Newport Mall
  • Route 440/Hudson Mall
  • Westside Avenue

In fact, both Jersey City malls – Newport Mall and Hudson Mall – are located within a designated Urban Enterprise Zone. Purchases made within the Urban Enterprise Zone are charged 3.5 percent sales tax, down from the standard 7 percent New Jersey state sales tax, in an effort to generate business.

According to the site www.destinationjerseycity.com, Jersey City’s ten shopping districts offer a “tempting mix of culturally diverse gift shops, corner stores, fashion boutiques, and retailers of everything from jewelry and perfume to hardware and appliances.”

“Sidewalk shopping in Jersey City is better than ever,” the site noted, “with helpful signs, improved street lighting and regular safety patrols, thanks to the efforts of local Jersey City merchants and the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation.”

Yes, New Jersey has been the butt of many jokes about malls, but shopping opportunities abound throughout the Garden State. Jersey City’s shopping variety does not disappoint.
